The future you can see

Explaining the launch of 3 Miles, a business set up by its founders to allow them to be curious about what's changing

By Jason Cobbold, Neil Hourston, and Tom Ewart

The conditions for creating business value are changing.

Technology is making previously impossible propositions commercially viable. Category boundaries are becoming less relevant. New competitors are challenging established assumptions about what customers value and what they're willing to pay. And consumers have more information, more choice and more influence than ever before.

At the same time, culture is moving faster. Expectations are rising. Sources of competitive advantage that once lasted decades can now be eroded in years.

For established businesses, this creates considerable uncertainty. But it also opens up new possibilities. There's a temptation, in uncertain times, to become more cautious. To concentrate on protecting what you've got, rather than imagining what might be possible.

But we see this as a moment to look up, not down. To be curious about what's changing. Optimistic about what it makes possible. And ambitious about the value businesses could create from it.

It’s the opportunity to reach customers in different ways. To rethink products, services and experiences. To enter new markets, build new partnerships and create new sources of revenue. To make a business more relevant, more distinctive and ultimately more valuable.

Some of these opportunities can be identified through analysis. Others require imagination: the ability to challenge an accepted assumption, make an unexpected connection or see commercial potential where others see none.

The three of us have spent our careers exploring this space, working in both agency and consultancy. We’ve seen what happens when strategic rigour meets creative imagination. How it can change the way millions of people think about a brand, open up new audiences, create new propositions, or find entirely new sources of value.

But we’ve never worked within a model that gives us the freedom to do this consistently. Too often, the brief, the way the work is organised, or the commercial model narrows the possibility. So we asked ourselves: what if this wasn’t something we did every now and then, when the right project came along? What if we built a company around that belief?

That's why we created 3 Miles.

Three miles is the visible distance to the horizon.

It’s the future you can see.

For us, it represents the next 18 months. Far enough ahead to create meaningful change. Close enough to see the opportunities taking shape and make something happen. Beyond the demands of the next quarter, but within the reach of decisions businesses can make today.

We are a value creation company. We work in the space between agency and consultancy. We bring rigour and imagination together to find the moves that can create the most value for a business.

That value can come from many different places. What matters is that the opportunity determines the answer. Not the other way around. And we've built the company to work that way.

We work with clients before the brief is written, getting closer to the business questions they're really trying to answer. We keep a small, senior team close to the work, bringing in the right specialist talent and partners for each challenge. We separate thinking from making, so our recommendations are never influenced by what we stand to earn from executing them. And we price the challenge, not the hours.

A company designed to give us the freedom to pursue whatever creates the greatest value.

Businesses have never had more information about what's coming. But seeing the future clearly and making something of it are two different things.

The future is coming into view.

3 Miles exists to help businesses create more value from it.
