Argos Brings Christmas Nostalgia With Richard Ayoade

The campaign, Tales of Argos Past, turns iconic mascots Connie and Trevor into ghosts of Christmas past

By Creative Salon

This Christmas, Argos has unveiled a major new campaign starring BAFTA-winning actor and comedian Richard Ayoade, designed to shake up the UK’s festive shopping habits. Drawing from A Christmas Carol, the film tackles a misconception born from British nostalgia for childhoods spent circling wish-lists in the legendary Argos catalogue: that Argos is just for toys. Iconic brand mascots Connie and Trevor return as Christmas ghosts to set the record straight, showing that Argos has gifts - not just toys - for everyone on the list.

Directed by Merman’s Declan Lowney, the campaign sees Ayoade take on the role of the Scrooge character, bound by his fond memories of "Argos Past." Like millions across the UK, his view of the brand is born of childhood nostalgia and the hours spent fondly circling dream presents in the legendary Argos catalogue. However, the film humorously reveals that this very nostalgia is the root of a widespread misconception that Argos is exclusively a toy retailer.

Summoned to break his nostalgic spell, cheeky brand duo Connie and Trevor intervene to take Ayoade on a festive journey of enlightenment, akin to A Christmas Carol. By guiding him through Christmases past and visions of Christmas future, they show Richard that Argos is a one-stop destination packed with an array of desirable, premium gifts - ranging from high-end tech, to stylish homeware.

The campaign also lands across split-screen Out-of-Home sites, taking the British public on a nostalgic trip through iconic 80s and 90s Argos catalogues. The creative pairs vintage Christmas morning favourites - like the original Mr Frosty and Game Boy Colour - side-by-side with their sleek and modern Argos equivalents - from Ninja Slushies to Nintendo Switches.

First launched in 2023, the 'There’s More to Argos' brand platform uses Connie and Trevor to bring the retailer’s quality offering to life. By leaning into the nostalgia of the catalogue this year, the campaign cleverly tackles consumer bias head-on, shifting perceptions to showcase the surprising, high-quality, and top-tier brands available at Argos this festive season. The campaign launches across TV, social and OOH.

Richard Ayoade, Actor, said: Like many, I live to circle, whether landing a light aircraft, skipping round roundabouts, or marking up the Argos catalogue. I, and this is a matter of public record, am also filled with Christmas joy. This represents a unique opportunity to combine these two loves. I enjoyed the whole experience much more than I care to admit.

Laura Boothby, Head of Campaigns at Argos, said: “Millions of us share fond memories of circling our dream Christmas lists in the Argos catalogue, and toys will always be an important part of our Christmas story. But what people might not always realise is just how much more Argos has to offer today. This year, Connie and Trevor are back to showcase that breadth with humour and charm, from the latest tech to design-led homeware and top-tier beauty. There really is more to Argos.”

Matt Moreland and Chris Clarke, Executive Creative Directors at T&P, said: We all grew up circling what we wanted for Christmas in the back of the Argos catalogue, so it’s no wonder people think of us for toys rather than premium gifts. This year we wanted to right this wrong, and what better way to do that than through a Christmas classic - A Christmas Carol. Where Richard Ayoade stars alongside the ghosts of Christmas past and presents, Connie and Trev. We hope the public love the integrated campaign as much as we do. And if you still think Argos is just for toys... bah humbug.

Declan Lowney, Director, said: It was great fun bringing Charles Dickens into the world of Argos, especially with Richard Ayoade along for the ride. We wanted to capture that lovely sense of Christmas nostalgia while giving it a fresh comic twist. Richard was brilliant, and the VFX have helped us create a world that feels both wonderfully familiar and just a little bit bonkers.
