The Financial Times Reacts to Chancellor John Healey's Tightrope Budget
The latest OOH campaign in the For the Why platform is from New Commercial Arts
29 October 2026
The Financial Times has launched the latest creative in its consumer marketing campaign, For the Why, responding to the UK Autumn Budget by highlighting the difficult choices facing chancellor John Healey.
Launched just hours after the Budget was delivered in the House of Commons, the out-of-home advertising campaign captures the challenge of balancing support for working people with fiscal discipline. The advertisement uses the campaign's familiar question-and-answer format: "Who? The chancellor. What? Autumn Budget. Where? A rock and a hard place." It closes with the line “For the Why. Financial Times”.
Developed by New Commercial Arts (NCA), the campaign builds on the FT's campaign, For the Why, introduced earlier this year to highlight the value of its journalism in helping readers understand not just what is happening in the world, but why it matters.
The advertisements will appear in key London financial districts, including Canary Wharf and Bank, with media planning and buying handled by the7stars.
Chris Storey, Head of Creative Strategy at Financial Times, said, “The Budget is a moment when people are looking for more than just the headlines. They want to understand the decisions being made and what they mean for the economy, businesses and households. For the Why is built around that need for deeper understanding, and this latest creative brings that idea to life in a timely and distinctive way..”
Ian Heartfield, Founder & Chief Creative Officer at New Commercial Arts, said, “Coverage around the Autumn budget gets noisy very quickly, so we’re using ‘For the Why’ to demonstrate how the FT cuts through by offering a clearer and deeper understanding of what it all means.”
Chris Herbert-Lo, Head of Strategy at the7stars, said, “The UK Budget is one of the year's biggest political and economic moments, with ramifications for businesses and households across the country. By putting the FT where the story is unfolding, using high-impact outdoor formats, we’re ensuring the brand shows up in the moment and on the ground - just like its brilliant team of journalists.”
