IKEA brings the ultimate storage solution to gamers with KALLAX Storageborn

Created by Mother in partnership with Kinggath Creations, the campaign unveils ultimate storage solution for over encumbered The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim players

IKEA has today unveiled its latest brand activation, ‘KALLAX Storageborn’ - a free downloadable Skyrim Creation for Bethesda Game Studio’s iconic open-world RPG The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim that transforms the retailer’s iconic KALLAX shelving unit into a fully voiced, sentient companion character.

The idea has been conceived and executed by creative agency Mother, in partnership with Kinggath Creations - a team of creatives, fans and mod developers who make fun and original content that blends seamlessly into the game world. The activation leverages IKEA’s core positioning as a provider of home storage solutions and applies it to a key pain point within gaming culture: inventory limits and clutter management.

Nearly 15 years after its initial release, Skyrim remains one of the world's most played RPGs. However, its 'encumbrance' mechanic - which slows down players carrying too many items - has spawned over a decade of community memes and frustration. IKEA’s KALLAX Storageborn directly addresses this by providing players with unlimited inventory capacity, automated nearby loot collection, and an instant home-tidying mechanic for in-game properties that brings the retailer’s extensive storage expertise to a whole new world.

Voiced by BAFTA-winning actor and comedian Matt Berry, players meet KALLAX Storageborn through a new questline. Once over-encumbered with loot, they're approached by an emissary and sent to a mysterious, and potentially familiar, Dwemer furniture store, where KALLAX is built and brought to life.

From then on he can be summoned at any time with a new Dragon Shout - "AYE KEY YAH" - whether or not he's the active companion. A second, clutter filled dungeon, based on a Nord archive, reveals his origins and ends in a boss fight with a Clutter Golem.

The campaign highlights IKEA’s strategy of extending its Democratic Design principles beyond physical retail spaces into emerging digital ecosystems and virtual environments where audiences spend significant leisure time.

Kemi Anthony, Marketing Communications Manager at IKEA UK and IE, commented: “Matt Berry's distinctive, legendary voice brings theatrics, booming authority and charm to the new Creation. In bringing KALLAX to life we hope to not only make a meaningful difference for Skyrim players, but doing so with a touch of added IKEA playfulness to delight gamers who've long been bogged down by too much stuff. We’re looking forward to seeing how this cross channel campaign resonates with such an engaged and enthusiastic audience as IKEA - and its smart storage solutions - enter a whole new world.”

Nick Hallbery, Executive Creative Director at Mother, commented: "IKEA has been solving storage problems for years, but bad storage isn't only a real-world issue. As longtime Skyrim fans, we knew how rampant the discourse was around the game's lack of storage solutions — which is exactly why this felt like the perfect collab. It's been 15 years and no one had solved the biggest pain point for players. But IKEA are the absolute experts of storage IRL, so bringing that expertise to Skyrim felt like a no-brainer. What we've orchestrated is a fan-first entry for IKEA into this world, bringing players a genuinely helpful solution in a way that's completely unexpected."

The IKEA KALLAX Storageborn add-on Creation will be available to download for free via Bethesda Game Studios in-game Creations menu from September 9, and will be supported by a wider digital, social, and gaming PR push.
